Withybush FM “Awards for All Wales" grant allows 24-hour broadcasting.

David Warren Programme Controller, James Dash Committee Member, Matthew Nicklin Chairman.

Local hospital broadcaster Withybush FM is to begin 24-hour broadcasting after being awarded a grant of £5,000 for new computer equipment and software for its studios from the lottery-funded grants programme ‘Awards for All Wales ’.

The new equipment will enable volunteers to extend its broadcast of programmes for patients and staff of Withybush from its existing weekend and weeknight schedule to 24-hours a day on its frequency of 87.7FM.

The new 24-hour broadcasting will begin this weekend with a 50-hour sponsored broadcast starting at 7pm on Friday 13th July, which will see presenters on the station on-air continuously until 9pm on Sunday 15th July 2007.

Withybush FM Chairman, Matthew Nicklin is delighted at the award. He said:

“We are entering the 30th year of hospital broadcasting at Withybush. The new equipment we have been able to buy with the “Awards for All Wales” grant has made a new chapter in our history possible with 24-hour broadcasting. We will look forward to providing an enhanced service for patients and staff at Withybush, including audio books and an increased news service. The sponsored broadcast will not only launch the new 24-hour broadcasting but is an essential part of raising funds for the charity.

“It’s hard work to broadcast for 50 hours, but we are hoping to raise much needed further funds for the costs of running the station. Withybush FM depends entirely on donations and we are so grateful for all the local businesses who will be sponsoring individual hour of the broadcast,” Mr Nicklin said.

Withybush FM is entirely staffed by volunteers who staff the station, from technical staff to on-air presenters. Local celebrity Connie Fisher was once a volunteer for the station.

Treasurer, Hilary Raymond said: “We are always looking for new volunteers. It’s a great way to get involved with broadcasting. Connie started off with Radio Withybush and look where it got her. Radio Withybush was the first local station to broadcast in Pembrokeshire. Now we have our own commercial station as well as other commercial stations available in Wales . For anyone interested in radio, hospital radio is recognised as the first step on the ladder.”

Asked about the process of receiving the award, Mr Nicklin said:

“The whole process of applying for the grant was very easy and straightforward and we are really pleased to have received these vital funds. Any charity or community group in need of a grant should definitely look into applying for an award.”
