Centrally
located Haverfordwest is an ideal inland base from which
to explore all of the Pembrokeshire coast. This historic
county town, with its steep streets, riverside shops
and handsome houses, is full of interest. The first
place to catch the eye is the ruined 12th century castle
perched on a hill above the rooftops. Castle House,
next door, contains the town museum. When the Western
Cleddau (which flows into the Milford Haven waterway)
was navigable, Haverfordwest was a thriving port. Memories
of those times can be seen along the Old Quay with its
warehouses and Bristol Trader Inn. Old and new mix together,
for nearby there is a modern riverside shopping complex.
It is well worth wandering amongst Haverfordwest's lanes
and streets. There is a wealth of Georgian architecture
to appreciate and St Mary's Church, at the top of High
Street, has wonderful stained glass windows.
